What are Why Bars?
Real food. No fillers, no protein powder, no wellness theater. Why Bars are superfood snack bars made with organic chia seeds, whole fruits, and ingredients you can actually pronounce — built for sustained energy, not a sugar spike. Gluten-free, vegan, soy-free, and made in Michigan.

Why should I choose Why Bars over a protein bar?
Because protein isn't the whole story. Endurance athletes have known forever that real performance comes from balanced macros — that's why marathoners eat bananas, not whey shakes. Why Bars lead with fiber, healthy fats, and clean carbs alongside natural protein, so your energy holds steady instead of peaking and crashing. One bar. Balanced. Done.

Any allergens I should know about?
Why Bars are gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, and kosher. However, they are made on equipment that also processes peanuts, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, and cashews. If you have a tree nut or peanut allergy, please keep that in mind before eating.

Are Why Bars Right For Me?

Can my kids eat them?

Absolutely. Same clean ingredients, no compromise. Why Bars have about one-third the sugar of most commercial snack bars, so you're not trading nutrition for convenience. Apple, blueberry, and cherry flavors tend to win with younger taste buds.

Are they low in sugar?

Most flavors clock in between 6 and 7 grams of sugar. Zesty Lemon is the lowest at 6g, Choco Peanut is the highest at 9g. For context, the average granola bar runs 12 grams or more. We're not sugar-free, but we're not hiding sugar behind a long ingredient list either.

Are they a good option if I'm watching my blood sugar?

The low sugar helps, and so does the fiber. Chia seeds slow digestion and support a gradual energy release rather than a spike-and-crash. That said, we're not doctors. If you're managing a specific condition, check with yours.

Do they have protein?

Yes. Most flavors have 5 grams from organic chia seeds and nut butters. Choco Peanut has 7. But here's the thing: Why Bars aren't protein bars. The point is balance. Fiber, healthy fats, clean carbs, and natural protein working together. That's what actually sustains you.

Are they high in fiber?

4 grams per bar, from organic chia seeds. Chia acts as a prebiotic too, feeding your gut microbiome rather than just passing through. A healthy gut means better energy, better immunity, better everything. It's one of the reasons athletes have relied on chia for endurance for centuries, but that's a whole other story. How long will one bar keep me full?

Most people find 2 to 3 hours. The chia seeds absorb water and slow digestion, which is what creates sustained energy rather than a quick hit. It's not magic. It's just how real food works.

What's the shelf life?

One year at room temperature. No preservatives needed when your ingredients are stable and clean to begin with.

Ingredients

Do you use organic ingredients?

We use organic chia seeds, mango, lemon extract, cacao, and coconut oil. Not every ingredient carries a certified organic label, but we're deliberate about every single one. Where it comes from, how it's grown, why it's in the bar. That's the ingredient snob in us. [→ See full sourcing breakdown]

Where do your ingredients come from?

We source locally where we can. Blueberries and cherries from Michigan, peanut butter freshly made by Germack in Detroit, almonds and lemon extract from California. Beyond that, we go to the best source for each ingredient: cacao from Peru, chia seeds from Paraguay and Mexico, coconut oil from Sri Lanka. [→ Full ingredient sourcing breakdown]

What's the main source of protein?

Organic chia seeds, plus almond or peanut butter depending on the flavor. No dairy-based protein concentrates, no isolates, no powders. Just ingredients that happen to contain protein.

What is tapioca syrup and why is it in there?

It's a minimally processed sweetener from cassava root that we use in small amounts to bind the bars and add a touch of sweetness. Lower glycemic impact than cane sugar, none of the baggage of corn syrup. Every ingredient earns its place.

What is sunflower lecithin?

A natural emulsifier from sunflower seeds that helps bind ingredients and supports digestion. We use it instead of soy lecithin, keeping the bar soy-free while getting the same functional benefit. [→ Full ingredient deep dive]

Does cacao have caffeine?

A small amount, about 5mg per bar in Super Cacao and Choco Peanut. A cup of coffee has roughly 100mg or more. Most people don't notice it at all, but it's worth knowing.
